GSR (Glutathione-Disulfide Reductase) is a Protein Coding gene. This gene encodes a member of the class-I pyridine nucleotide-disulfide oxidoreductase family. GSR, a key member of the glutathione antioxidant defense system, converts oxidized glutathione (GSSG) to reduced glutathione (GSH) and maintains the intracellular glutathione redox state to protect the cells from oxidative damage. It is a central enzyme of cellular antioxidant defense. Under normal physiological conditions, GSR is not essential for the maintenance of antioxidant defenses in the mouse cochlea. The antioxidant enzyme GSR gene polymorphisms are significantly associated with bone mineral density (BMD). Diseases associated with GSR include Hemolytic Anemia Due To Glutathione Reductase Deficiency and Riboflavin Deficiency.
